Abstract

Rapid urbanization, population growth, and climate change have accelerated global freshwater scarcity, positioning treated wastewater reuse as a critical cornerstone of circular water economies. This article evaluates and identifies pathways to improve current decentralized and centralized wastewater reclamation technologies. While conventional activated sludge processes fail to eliminate emerging contaminants (ECs), microplastics, and persistent organic pollutants, advanced reclamation trains show significant promise.
